Our Team


Chris Dobbin, CA

Chris founded Precipice Capital and leads the firm's financing and transaction activities for clients in various industries. Chris has over 15 years of experience, has been named one of Atlantic Canada's Emerging Leaders, manages one of Atlantic Canada's fastest growing group of companies, and has received national recognition as the recipient of the 2013 EMDA Private Debt Deal of the Year and 2012 EMDA Private Equity Deal of the Year awards.

Chris advises entrepreneurs, business owners, management teams and private company Boards in the areas of strategic finance, growth strategy, restructuring, acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures. His advice has been sought after by high growth technology firms, real estate companies, private equity firms, energy services companies, marine based services companies and oil and gas services companies. Chris has led negotiations with various private and public entities and has been involved in a number of complex transactions.

Chris is a Chartered Accountant, a member of Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO), a graduate of Mount Allison University and can usually be found swimming across the Northumberland Strait from NB to PEI in the summer or attempting other physically challenging events in an effort to raise funds for various children's charities.


Philip Bassil, MBA
managing director

Phil has over 15 years of corporate finance, capital markets and international business experience, particularly in the power, utilities, alternative energy, cleantech, telecom, technology, real estate and financial services industries.

Prior to joining Precipice Capital, Phil was Managing Director of BSM Global Partners Inc. a strategic advisory firm specializing in the power and utilities sector. Earlier in his career, Phil was a Utilities & Special Situations Analyst at Beacon Securities. Prior to that, Phil provided investment advice to institutional investors and pension funds as part of the team at Scotia Capital, the Capital Markets & Investment Banking division of the Bank of Nova Scotia, in Toronto.

Phil earned a Bachelor of Computer Science in the Electrical Engineering stream from the Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS) and holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA), specializing in Finance, from Dalhousie University.

John Hughes (Captain), MBA, MM
managing director, marine & shipping services

John joined Precipice Capital after serving as founding President of a newly formed marine offshore services firm. John brings with him 33 years of experience in the marine industry and is a Master Mariner with over six years of command experience, primarily in support of offshore oil exploration.

The majority of John's career has encompassed both commanding vessels and fulfilling senior executive roles in ship management. From 2007-2012, John was President of a consulting firm operating internationally on diverse marine related business projects. Prior to that, John spent sixteen years with a vessel operating company in progressively senior roles, including Managing Director, where he was responsible for the efficient management of a fleet of 17 vessels working in the international markets.

John's ongoing experience in the marine industry gives him a current and in-depth knowledge of marine operations and of the business of transporting goods and materiel by sea. As a yachtsman, John was the first Canadian to race solo around the world under sail, completing the BOC Challenge in 1987. For his tenacity during this event, John was awarded the Royal Yachting Association Seamanship Award by HRH Princess Anne.

John held two terms on the Board of Directors of the Offshore/Onshore Trade Association of Nova Scotia (OTANS), and is involved with several charitable organizations in the Greater Halifax region. John received his MBA from St. Mary's University in 2007.

Melanie Smith
manager, advisory services

Melanie joined Precipice Capital in 2012 after 12 years at a national accounting firm, where she worked exclusively in Corporate Finance for five years. Melanie has assisted senior staff on multiple M&A deals covering the fields of communication, petroleum, waste management and transportation. She has also led multiple business valuation engagements of privately held companies for the purposes of corporate tax planning, succession planning, shareholder disputes and matrimonial dissolution.

Melanie's breadth of experience includes preparing client transaction marketing materials and information memorandums, liaising with key transaction work streams including key client stakeholders and external vendors/bidders, developing valuation, financial and strategic analysis, synthesizing research information to be used in modeling, competitive analysis, industry analysis, negotiation support and various other applications, and facilitating and managing the due diligence process.
